ABDOMINAL AND PELVIC VISCERAL RECEPTORS BFLeek ABDOMINAL AND PELVIC VISCERAL RECEPTORS

چکیده
The abdominal and pelvic viscera are innervated by the vagaL splanchnic and pelvic nerves. It is estimated that these nerves have afferent:efferent fibre ratios of 9:1, 3:1 and 1:1, respectively. Despite this numerical preponderance of sensory fibres, the roles of the visceral input remain rather vague. Visceral sensory mechanisms are investigated by applying different kinds of stimulus to specific visceral structures and recording the evoked responses. The problems arising from this are that the common forms of stimulation (e.g. distension) excite more than one kind of receptor, and that one receptor type may be excited by several unrelated kinds of stimuli. The magnitude of these problems depends upon the methods of recording the evoked responses, which fall into three groups: (i) descriptions of conscious visceral sensations in man; 00 studies of reflex responses in experimental animals; and (iii) electrophysiological recording of the nervous activity in afferent visceral pathways. Only the last-named methods are capable of differentiating between the responses of different kinds of receptor and of circumventing the problems. The present review will be confined therefore largely to a discussion of the results arising from the use of electrophysiological recording techniques. However, the results obtained under the above three headings are complementary. Whilst the electrophysiological techniques demonstrate receptor responses, sensory descriptions and reflex studies are necessary for determining the functional significance of changes in visceral afferent nerve inputs made evident by the electrophysiological recordings.

Bedside Testing for Chronic Pelvic Pain: Discriminating Visceral from Somatic Pain
Objectives. This study was done to evaluate three bedside tests in discriminating visceral pain from somatic pain among women with chronic pelvic pain. Study Design. The study was an exploratory cross-sectional evaluation of 81 women with chronic pelvic pain of 6 or more months' duration. Tests included abdominal cutaneous allodynia (aCA), perineal cutaneous allodynia (pCA), abdominal and perin...
متن کاملConvergence of multiple pelvic organ inputs in the rat rostral medulla.
Electrophysiological recordings were used to investigate the degree of pelvic/visceral convergent inputs onto single medullary reticular formation (MRF) neurons. A total of 94 MRF neurons responsive to bilateral electrical stimulation of the pelvic nerve (PN) in 12 urethane-anaesthetized male rats were tested for responses to mechanical stimulation of the urinary bladder, urethra, colon and pen...
متن کاملAnimal models of gastrointestinal and liver diseases. Animal models of visceral pain: pathophysiology, translational relevance, and challenges.
Visceral pain describes pain emanating from the thoracic, pelvic, or abdominal organs. In contrast to somatic pain, visceral pain is generally vague, poorly localized, and characterized by hypersensitivity to a stimulus such as organ distension. Animal models have played a pivotal role in our understanding of the mechanisms underlying the pathophysiology of visceral pain. This review focuses on...
متن کاملFunctional anatomy of the female pelvic floor.
The anatomic structures in the female that prevent incontinence and genital organ prolapse on increases in abdominal pressure during daily activities include sphincteric and supportive systems. In the urethra, the action of the vesical neck and urethral sphincteric mechanisms maintains urethral closure pressure above bladder pressure. Decreases in the number of striated muscle fibers of the sph...
متن کاملCharacterization of the Visceral Antinociceptive Effect of Glial Glutamate Transporter GLT-1 Upregulation by Ceftriaxone
Recent studies demonstrate that glial glutamate transporter-1 (GLT-1) upregulation attenuates visceral nociception. The present work further characterized the effect of ceftriaxone- (CTX-) mediated GLT-1 upregulation on visceral hyperalgesia. Intrathecal pretreatment with dihydrokainate, a selective GLT-1 antagonist, produced a reversal of the antinociceptive response to bladder distension prod...
